The historical and philosophical essay prepared by A. E. Savinkin, editor of the Russian Military Collection, provides a general idea of the military legacy of Peter the Great, the outstanding state and military figure of Russia, the founder of the regular army and navy, a wise military leader and thinker. Particular attention is drawn to the example of the personal patriotic service of Peter the Great to the Russian state, its desire to establish the country as a military power. Military transformations of Peter the Great in the domestic historiography The article is devoted to the historiography of the key issues of the Petrine military reforms. It is written on the basis of the author’s extensive analysis of military historical literature, published documents, and archival materials. The judgments of domestic and foreign historians on the main issues related with the transformations of Peter the Great in the military sphere are considered. A wide range of views on the same issue, on the same historical fact, in the opinion of the author, confronts modern historians with the task of establishing the truth through a thorough and detailed study of the military reforms of the Petrine period with the involvement of documentary sources.

Formation of the military investigative apparatus during the period of the legislative reforms of Peter the Great
The article analyzes the process of origin of military investigative bodies. Various points of view on this issue are presented. The ambiguous approaches of jurists and historians to the issue of emergence of the first bodies of preliminary investigation in Russia are compared. Significant attention is paid to the examination of the Order to the “major” investigation chambers approved by Peter the Great.

Dangerous conjunction: “hybrid wars” and “color revolutions”
The article discusses the problems of counteracting the use of modern destructive social technologies reformatting the political space with the help of “hybrid wars” understood as a form of undeclared, secret military actions of one state against state structures, the regular army and the population of the adversary and the so-called “color revolutions” as a political technology regarding the peaceful replacement of undesirable political regimes. Based on the analysis of modern political science literature, a conclusion is made about the increasing possibility of the complex application of these technologies against our country. A number of measures is proposed in the political sphere in order to ensure the national security of Russia in these conditions.

The paper presents the analysis of “softpower” and “hybridwarfare” concepts. The nature and content of the influence of “soft power” on the institutions of the state and society are disclosed, and the nature of controlled chaos is considered. Humanitarian aspects of the Syrian operation in the mirror of the information war
The operation of Russian Aerospace Forces in Syria not only gave us invaluable combat experience, but also gave us an opportunity to learn important lessons in the conduct of information and psychological confrontation. Based on the analysis of publications of Russian and foreign media, the author analyzes the main directions and methods of struggle in this area. The directions of the information attack of the Western media regarding Russia’s actions in Syria are examined. It is concluded that the ability of the state to withstand the opposition in the information warfare is one of the main factors of the safe development of the state and the stability of its public system functioning.

The article reveals certain trends in the development of the ideology of terrorism in the territory of the Russian Federation. The author uses materials collected during official missions to the North Caucasus Region in order to assess the ideology of terrorism. Some reasons causing changes in the ideology of terrorism are considered. An approach is presented for assessing the effectiveness of the fight against terrorism through the prism of the goals and objectives proclaimed by the leaders of terrorist organizations.

On the eve of the 76th anniversary of the first combat use of the field rocket-launching artilleryof the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War, the author examines the issues of its creation in the interwar years, field trials and acceptance for service. An important place is given to the analysis of the development of the field rocket-launching artilleryof the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War, the psychological impact of its use on the enemy troops and Soviet soldiers. The author gives his judgments on the main advantages and disadvantages of using rocket-launching installations during the war. A special attention in the article is paid to Captain Ivan Flerov, commander of the 1st experimental battery of the Red Army’s field rocket-launching artillery.

Tactics lessons of 1944(experience of delivering an assault aviation strike on the opponent’s airfield)
The article gives a detailed descriptive reenactment of the air strike of May 2, 1944 delivered by the 5th Assault Air Corps on the Lvоv airfield of the German fascist aviation. The authors notice basic principles of the military art masterfully implemented in the preparation of and during the strike. The authors highlight methods and tactical maneuvers used by the aircrafts’ crews and their heroism, bravery and fearlessness. According to the authors of the article, the experience of organizing and performing assault air strikes against enemy airfields is still relevant in modern military theory and practice.

“To improve political and organizing work in the masses of soldiers”: for the 50th anniversary of establishment of military political defense colleges in the Soviet Union Armed Forces
The article reviews the reasons and the necessity of establishment of the military political defense colleges net to train political workers for all branches of the Soviet Union Armed Forces. It is underlined that military education was guided by the dominant Marxist-Leninist ideology. That was a special feature of studying in these establishments. It is concluded that the established practice of organizing the educational process in these military educational colleges as a whole proved its viability and ensured the solution of the tasks of training the staff of different units of the political commissariat for the needs of the Army and Navy.

Professional training of Russian Navy officers for the organization of moral and psychological support in the post-Soviet period (1997-2012)
By the example of the Navy the article reviews the issues of the organization and contents of the officers-instructors training during the formation of the Russian Armed Forces. The article shows that the growing problems with the organization of educational work in the Army and the Navy and its personnel in the post-Soviet period have put the military leadership of the country in front of the need to revive the system of training officers for personnel agencies. Argumentation of the grounds for the establishment of the Humanities Department of the Naval Institute named after A. S. Popov is presented. The basic directions of activity of the department for preparation of officers on the "Organization of moral and psychological support" specialty are considered during 10 years of its activity.

The article discusses the need to strengthen the pedagogical orientation of military-professional training of students in military educational institutions. The conditions for the formation of the students’ interested conscious attitude to mastering the pedagogical competences and increasing students’ activity during the educational process by means of improving the methodology for conducting training sessions are determined. On the issue of the training of scientific and pedagogical personnel at the present stage of the development of the higher military school
The article presents the substantiation of the idea of self-development of the individual in the activity that is the basis for the design and implementation of the model for the training of scientific and pedagogical personnel in the higher military educational institutions and is corresponding to the imperatives of continuous qualitative changes in the military pedagogical process. The research is based on the experience of the creation and functioning of such a model at the Military University. The main result of the study is an attempt to design and implement a model of scientific and pedagogical preparation of the associates (adjuncts) of higher military schools, which is aimed at the self-development of an individual.

The article examines the scientific and theoretical foundations and some problems of the formation of the outlook of guardsmen. The current state of the sociological support of military control
The author's approach to the essence and understanding of sociological support in the Russian Armed Forces, its place and role in the control of troops (forces) is considered in the article. On the base of the study results conducted by the authors, the features of the current state of the sociological conduct of military control are analyzed. The problems of organization and contents of sociological support in military units are singled out. On March 28, 2017, within the framework of the events dedicated to the 50th anniversary of the formation of higher military-political schools, a scientific and practical conference on the topic “The Deputy Commander for Work with the Personnel – organizer of moral and psychological support of troops (forces): history, continuity, state and prospects” was held in the Congress Hall of the Military University of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The conference was attended by representatives of the state authorities and military administration of the Russian Federation, veterans of the political and educational work of the Armed Forces: former chiefs and graduates of higher military and political schools.
Information educational environment: on the way to a new quality of military education
On May 24, 2017 a seminar on the topic:"Information education environment for the training of military personnel" was held in the Military University. Representatives of educational organizations of higher education and military authorities of the Russian Defense Ministry took part in it. The topic of the seminar was very relevant, as its goal is the development of a common understanding of the directions for the creation (development) of single information educational environment for the training of military personnel in the military education system of the Russian Defense Ministry in the short and long term. Actually, this is the first forum, where the results of the transition of military universities to training with the use of electronic textbooks were analyzed.
Extremism doesn’t fit in military collectives
On May 16, 2017, a methodological seminar on "Actual problems of countering extremism in military collectives" was held in the Military University. The main goal was to analyze the workmanshipof university officials on the spiritual, cultural and moral development of cadets, including the education of their interethnic and interreligious tolerance, international and communication feelings, their protection from the ideology of extremism disseminated through information and communication technologies.

It was noted that "this book is the only publication in the history of the country evaluating the activity of the educational institutions system of the same profile training of specialists." A notable event in the life of the Military University was the publication of the book “To burn people's heart with the word…” Essays on the History of Soviet Military-Political Educational Institutions, "devoted to the 50th anniversary of the establishment of higher military-political schools. The publication consisting of five essays is the first experience of a generalized, holistic study of the history of the establishment and development of Soviet military-political educational institutions in the period from 1918 to 1991.
