“Strategy is a Science of a Purely Practical Goal...”: the Professor of Strategy of the Imperial Military Academy, General of Artillery N.V. Medem’s Creative Legacy

The article deals with the becoming and scientific activity of the Russian military scientist N.V. Medem. It is emphasized that with a wide range of military-scientific creativity the most significant contribution of him was made to the strategy theory which at that time was considered as a science of war and included not yet separately isolated philosophical, political, psychological, sociological and economic problems of preparation and conduct of military operations. The ways of independent development of the science of war as a special period in the life of the state and its people, a period of complex internal or international struggle, the result of which depends on their historical destiny in relation to the interests and conditions of Russia are shown in the article.

Russia’s Science to Win: Syrian Settlement Lessons

This information-analytical feature article by the editor of the Russian Military Collection A. E. Savinkin represents the main ideas of Russian Science of Victory in connection with the new achievements, challenges and problems of the Syrian company. The essay is the result of the scientific analysis of the materials on the topic supported by expert commentaries, actual ideological heritage of Russian military classics, thoughts of Russian leaders on the course and results of wars. Special attention is paid to the explanation of the complex approach to the Syrian crisis regulation, peacebuilding politics of the Russian leaders in the Syrian war. The necessity of the usage of the Syrian settlement model for other international crises, reduction of adversarial relationship between the West and Russia is proved. The perspectives of the further development of the Syrian situation are expressed. The military lessons of the Syrian settlement, the newest achievements of the Russian military strategy are detailed. The importance of the Syrian experience for the Russian Federation Armed Forces development is shown.

The article exposes some aspects of the party-political work in the troops of the 4th Ukrainian Front and the Separate Maritime army during the Crimea liberation in the spring of 1944. It is based on the recently published documents of the Central Archive of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defense and the memories. The author considers that the experience of the political workers of the Great Patriotic War period, including the one got in the course of the preparation and execution of the Crimean offensive operation, has the instructive character, gives certain recommendations for practical use of the experience by the military-political workers of the Russian Federation Armed Forces in their further practical work.

Higher Military-Political School’s Evolution in the Postwar Period (1945-1991)

The article examines the main stages and peculiarities of the Military-political Academy n.a. V.I.Lenin development, as well as the teaching-guiding and party-political activity of the field-oriented academic department of the party-political work and the bases of military training of the Soviet Armed Forces in the post-war years. The role of the academy teaching staff and the leading academic department in the high quality political workers training for the Soviet Armed Forces and the Navy is shown. The ideological basis, values and tasks system of National organizations of “vitiazy”, Russian scouts, the musketeer alliances and Socol movemens in 1920-1980 are discerned. The main methods and forms of activities of émigré youth organizations are disclosed. Special attention is paid to the system of young people military training.

Serving as an Epitome of Courage and Valour (on the Moral-Fighting Qualities of Russia’s Army Officers During the First World War)

The article is devoted to the moral and combat qualities of the Russian Army in the Great War of 1914-1918. Basing on the analysis of the archival and other sources the author shows that the officers mostly had qualities essential for carrying out duty in the combat conditions. There are examples of heroic behavior of the officers on the battlefield. The author concludes that it is necessary to strengthen the spiritual liaison between the modern military men and the previous generations of the Fatherland defenders in the name of spiritual duty fulfillment and strengthening of the moral-combat potential of the Russian Federation Armed Forces.

The Confrontation of Propagandists in the Battle of Stalingrad

The years that have passed since the “Perestroika” have practically deprived the Russian army of such powerful weapons as Party political work. The experience of the Great Patriotic War shows that its impact is quite comparable with the use of weapons of mass destruction. The experience of the Great Patriotic War shows that its impact is quite comparable with the use of weapons of mass destruction. Skillfully organized propaganda work was one of the decisive factors of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad. The article is devoted to the activities of the Political Directorate of the Red Army: special propaganda and its features, manifested during the Battle of Stalingrad. The authors identified a number of patterns in the development of propaganda directed at the enemy soldiers. The main feature was the departure from the ideologized patterns in the special propaganda and agitation towards the psychological impact on the enemy troops. The experience gained on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War allows it to be widely used in modern hybrid wars.

The Challenge of Preserving Cultural Heritage in the Context of Modern Armed Conflicts in the Middle East

The article discloses the problem of safekeeping and international legal protection of the cultural heritage in the conditions of the Middle Eastern region armed conflicts. Special attention is paid to the reasons and consequences of the cultural values destruction in Syria by the ISIL elements. Basing on the different sources and literature analysis the author estimates the modern cultural heritage conditions in the region. The way, methods and means of the cultural heritage objects preservation in the combat actions zone are discerned. The author concludes that in the conditions of modern combat conflicts including the Syrian one it is necessary to work out new mechanisms and tools of cultural and historical heritage protection, expand the aspects of work of the international institutes and structures taking into consideration the particularities of the religious-extremist factor.

The article offers the results of the research “Text as an educational and control mean at the Russian language lesson with foreign military men” that have been used in the author’s study guide. The norm-referenced system of standardized tests of the “Russian Language” introductory-grammatical course and formative-controlling tests of the Russian language prepositional-nominal system are represented.
